Public Awareness on Earthquake and Tsunami Hazards Campaign for Peninsular Malaysia Year 2008 will be launched on 21 July 2008 at Kompleks Kebudayaan dan Kesenian, Taman Budaya, Kangar, Perlis. The launching ceremony will be completed by Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Dr Mohd Isa Sabu, Perlis State Minister. Among expected distinguished guests at the launching are Y.Bhg. Dato’ Abdul Hanan Alang Endut, Secretary General of Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dato’ Muhammad Hatta bin Ab. Aziz, Secretary of National Security Council, Dr Yap Kok Seng, Director General of Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD), officers of MMD and participants from other various agencies. After Perlis, the campaign will move to other locations in Kedah, Penang and Perak.

The main objectives of this campaign is to increase understanding, knowledge and preparedness among the public regarding tsunami disaster particularly for the residents living at coastal areas. This campaign will expose the public about the Malaysian National Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM), its functions and the locations of the warning sirens. Other agencies will also explain their roles and actions during and after tsunami disaster.
