Introduction

The Central Forecast Office (CFO), located in the Head Office in Petaling Jaya, was established on 15 June 1997. It operates 24 hours a day and 365 days in a year, providing a comprehensive range of forecasting services to the general public and mass media. It is manned by a total of 20 staff working round the clock.

Function

The CFO is responsible for providing all types of public weather forecasting services to the general public and mass media.

Services

The CFO is responsible for providing the following meteorological services:-

Short-range general weather forecasts for the whole country
Short-range city forecasts for major cities in the country as well as major tourist areas
Customised weather forecasts for specific requests from clients
Monitoring the general weather condition throughout the country and issuing severe weather advisories and warnings, when necessary
Answering all queries with regard to weather forecast
Providing weather outlook when necessary

The CFO supplies customised forecasts upon request. A nominal fee is charged for the supply of these customised products and varies according to user requirements. All inquiries on customised weather forecasts can be made by calling 03-79678119 and requests for such products can be faxed to 03-79578052 or 03-79588221.

The severe weather warnings issued by CFO can be divided into the following types:

(a) Thunderstorm Warning

This short-range warning is issued whenever there are indications from the wind charts, radar echoes or current observations that severe thunderstorm activities are currently occurring or are going to occur over a particular area. The validity period of the thunderstorm warning is short and is effective for 2 to 6 hours only. 

(b) Heavy rainfall and strong wind warning over land areas

This warning is issued whenever (a) there is an early indication of the possibility of occurrence of heavy monsoonal rain, (b) strong wind or heavy rain associated with low pressure system/tropical disturbance/tropical storms over land areas. This warning is further categorised into 3 levels, YELLOW , ORANGE AND RED.

The general weather forecast for the whole country, the 5-day city forecast for major cities and major tourist areas as well as severe weather warnings are published on the home page of the Malaysia Meteorological Service.
