Kedah Meteorological Office was established around 1970 at the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar, Kedah. Kedah Meteorological Office includes 2 principal meteorological stations in Langkawi and Alor Setar and 1 meteorological radar station in Hutan Kampung Alor Setar. The offices responsibilities are to continuously monitor the weather situation and provide meteorological data for northern regions in the Peninsular Malaysia. The number of employees for the whole operation of the offices are 20 staffs. In addition, Kedah Meteorological Office is also responsible for overseeing the operations of components of the National Tsunami Early Warning System Malaysia (SAATNM). Among the components were 8 tsunami sirens and 4 seismic stations. Siren system and the seismic stations play a major role in preparing the country in the event of earthquake and tsunami.
To manage the administration, development and operations of the Department at the state level.
To ensure all the activities meet the state and national requirements.
To provide expert advisory services in the fields of meteorology, geophysics, and tsunami to government departments.
To monitor and to provide aviation weather information to aviation agencies.
To provide weather information and meteorological data to the public and clients from various sectors such as agriculture, construction, tourism, industry, transportation and fisheries.
To disseminate weather advisories or severe weather warnings to disaster management agencies and the general public.
To provide daily radio weather outlooks.

All meteorological services provided for civil aviation comply with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
Disseminate severe weather warnings issued by the National Weather and Geophysics Operations Centre to the public and government agencies immediately, to reduce the risk of loss of life and property.
Disseminate advisories or severe weather warnings within 30 minutes of receipt.
Respond immediately and courteously to all weather-related inquiries via telephone or in-person visits at any time (24 hours a day, including Sundays and public holidays).
